What is ceramic implants?
A ceramic implant is a dental implant made of zirconium dioxide (zirconia) rather than titanium. Zirconia is a tooth-colored ceramic with excellent biocompatibility and strength. It is an option for patients seeking a metal-free restoration, with thoughtful case selection based on bone, soft tissue, and bite considerations.
When ceramic implants are a good fit
Zirconia implants can be a strong option for patients who prefer a metal-free restoration, for those with very thin gum tissue where a tooth-colored implant body shows through, or for patients who simply want every component of their restoration to be ceramic. Case selection matters — not every site is well-suited to a one-piece zirconia design.
How they compare to titanium
Titanium implants have more than fifty years of clinical evidence and remain the most widely used and well-studied option. Zirconia implants are newer to the market and continue to accumulate long-term data, but published outcomes for well-selected cases are encouraging. We discuss the tradeoffs honestly during your consultation so you can choose the option that fits your priorities.
