What is iv sedation?
IV sedation is the intravenous administration of medications that produce deep relaxation and amnesia during dental surgery. The patient breathes on their own and protective reflexes remain intact. It is administered in our accredited surgical suite by a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon trained in anesthesia, with continuous monitoring throughout the procedure.
Why IV sedation matters
Surgical care is rarely something patients look forward to. IV sedation lets us deliver complex care — wisdom teeth, implants, bone grafting, multi-tooth extractions — in a single visit, with you fully relaxed and remembering little or none of it.
You’re not unconscious in the same way as general anesthesia: you breathe on your own, respond to spoken commands, and your protective reflexes remain. But your awareness, anxiety, and discomfort are dramatically reduced.
What it’s like
A small IV is placed in your arm or hand. Within seconds of medication being given, you become deeply relaxed. Most patients describe the experience as "going to sleep" — even though they’re technically conscious. The procedure feels like a brief moment in time.
Throughout, our anesthesia team continuously monitors your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and breathing. The surgical suite is equipped with the same monitoring and emergency-response capabilities as a hospital outpatient unit.
Safety
At Oaks Oral Surgery & Periodontics, patient safety is our highest priority. IV sedation administered by a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with extensive anesthesia training has an exceptional safety record, and every procedure is performed with advanced monitoring, emergency preparedness, and strict safety protocols.
Who is a candidate
Most healthy adults are good candidates. We review your medical history thoroughly at your consultation. Patients with certain medical conditions, recent illnesses, or medications that affect anesthesia (including GLP-1 drugs and blood thinners) need special planning — sometimes a hospital setting is safer, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case.
Before and after
No food or drink for 8 hours before your appointment. A responsible adult must drive you home. Wear loose clothing with sleeves that can be rolled above the elbow.
After the procedure, plan to rest for the day. You may feel groggy for a few hours but should be back to normal by the evening or the next morning. See our pre-op and post-op instructions for details.
Common questions
Will I be unconscious?
IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed state — you’re technically conscious but typically have no memory of the procedure. General anesthesia, which we also offer when needed, produces full unconsciousness.
Is IV sedation safe?
When administered by a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon in an accredited facility, IV sedation has an excellent safety record. Our surgical suite meets the same standards as hospital outpatient units.
Can I drive home?
No. Sedation medications take 24 hours to fully clear your system. You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and ideally stay with you for a few hours.
Does insurance cover sedation?
Sometimes. Coverage varies by plan and procedure. We verify benefits before treatment and let you know what to expect.
